Tom Allum creates reflective sound-based works. A practice of sound design for life.
Listening engages both primal and complex aspects of our being to enrich our experience. It connects us to the environments we inhabit. It brings us in connection with other humans and ourselves.
Tom’s fascination has led to years of exploration and work with the medium, often through collaborations exploring sound within visual, kinetic and musical projects.
Finding moments of sonic cohesion with others became somewhat of an addiction as he began making music with friends as a teen. Tom completed a degree in Live Sound For Theatre and Events at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). This provided a broad and technical basis for working with sound professionally. In 2010 he began performing with 80’s inspired Bastian’s Happy Flight and instrumental band, Antelope Tapes. The bands enabled him to hone his live and production skills while playing international supports and touring.
In 2013 he co-founded Barking Wolf with band-mate Mitchell Withers and they soon found a niche telling socially impactful documentaries. Sound design became a key tool for connecting intimately with audiences by deepening emotion, feel, place and voice.
Tom began applying approaches from music and documentary to other fields. 2016 onwards saw exhibitions, podcasts, film/tv audio post-production, teaching and ambient music composition. He also undertook an extensive yoga teacher training which allowed him to appreciate the mindful act of listening. He saw the value outside of simply creating sound as media.
These shifts in thought gave way to clearer creative expression.
Today Tom optimises his attention, engaging in projects within the arts, film and community sectors (and parents two beautiful children who slowly dampen his hearing health ❤️)
