CANAL ROCKS
exhibition, album, live performance
This project was initiated with Out of the Sea, an exhibition where isolated artists across Australia collaborated using a 3D point cloud scans taken at Canal Rocks near Margaret River, WA. Responding to the iconic site, artists and designers explore qualities of place at the edge of land and sea via a breadth of media; including laser scanning, photogrammetry, photography, drawing, video and sound recording.

Sound recordings were taken on site at specific points relating to the 3D spatial scanner locations. The recordings were treated, tuned and then installed into plinths and placed at points in the gallery space which reflected the recording location on site. The variation between time and location of recordings allowed for a harmonisation between the sound sources when they combined in the space. The plinths were made in collaboration with architect, Emerald Wise and explored shadow points where the spatial scanner device obscured itself and was unable to capture data, leaving voids in information for us to explore.
The soundscapes document, map and replay memories for those unable to physically experience the site. Tom worked with Dunsborough-based musician Matt Slocomb on a series on soundscapes exploring the recordings they took. Out in the wind, tangled in audio cables and bashed against rocks, the works attempted to capture the disparate emotion of the site - from swirling sheltered rock pools to the turmoil of the canal itself.
Canal Rocks Album and Live Performance
September, 2022
Tom Allum and Matt Slocomb performed the album live as a part of the Audible Edge Festival of sound 2022 in Fremantle. The set was partnered with projections made by photographer Emma Daisy using the spatial scans with additional analogue lighting and projection treatments.
